Bode Miller’s Younger Brother, Pro Snowboarder Chilly Miller, Dies After Seizure

MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. — Professional snowboarder Chelone “Chilly” Miller, the younger brother of U.S. Ski Team star Bode Miller, was known just as much for his optimism and kind personality as he was for his fearless presence on Mammoth Mountain’s biggest park features. He passed away early Sunday morning from an apparent seizure, stemming from a 2005 motorcycle accident that placed him in coma for 11 days. Although Chilly is the younger brother of alpine ski racer Bode Miller, he made his own name with his go-huge style at Loon Mountain, near his boyhood home in New Hampshire.

His return to competitive snowboarding was inspiring, and in 2010, he solidified his return with a superpark victory at Mammoth using this signature style. In recent years, he had been focusing on snowboardcross in order to qualify for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Just over a month ago, his Olympic dream showed promise as he finished fourth in the 2013 Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix at Canyons, UT and on March 12 he won the Rahlves Banzai Tour overall title with a victory in Sugar Bowl, Calif.

“Chelone Miller was an aspiring elite athlete who had made great progress as a snowboardcross rider this past season. We are all deeply saddened at the news of his death and extend our condolences to the entire Miller family,” said U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association President and CEO Bill Marolt.

His career also included filming with Warren Miller as well as other companies. Information on services is pending.
